No one wants to be just a nurse; you want to be a rock star nurse! Seriously, you want to be the best nurse you can be, and you want other people to say that you’re the best.

Or maybe you aren’t the type who wants the praise from others, but inside, you may want to feel like you are the best nurse that you can be. No one wants to be ordinary.

You need to go above and beyond to be a rock star nurse – whether you seek outside confirmation, inside satisfaction, or both.

1. Essentials

You need to know and practice the essentials before you can begin your journey to being a great nurse. Assessments, med pass, and charting should be second nature to you as you work through your shift.

Essentials can be other things, too. You should be well organized and able to prioritize your care.

Stress, though common, is something you can deal with, regardless of when it arises. You can stay calm and cool, and you know how to debrief at the end of the stressful section.

Rockstar nurses know how to take care of themselves and let their emotions out appropriately. This is an essential that is super important to being the best nurse you can be.

2. Compassion

Every nurse has compassion or at least aspires to it, but rockstar nurse status means you go above and beyond. Your compassion extends to your patients, their family members, your coworkers, and yourself.

What does compassion mean? It means attempting to understand what someone else is going through and then treating them with kindness.

It should be noted that nurses can have compassion overload, often referred to as compassion fatigue. This is why it is important to have compassion for yourself.

Ask for yourself, “If a patient came to me with the same problem, would I tell them the same hateful things I tell myself?” If the answer is no, then you are not having compassion for yourself.

You need to take care of yourself, to have compassion for your own suffering. This is the center point of being a rockstar nurse.

3. Fellowship

Patients are always number one, but your coworkers are a close second. Rockstar nurses are always available to help, whether it is with moving a patient in bed or lending a compassionate ear.

The bonds of fellowship among the players of a nursing unit are absolutely vital. Most nurses know that a bad team leads to stressed nurses and poor patient outcomes.

If you want to be the best nurse you can be, focus on being that nurse who tries to decrease the negativity, doesn’t participate in gossip, and can help others when possible. The best nurses are the ones that go above and beyond – and this means you do that for your coworkers, too.
